Communicating Empathy: Back Pocket Words and Phrases (2)

The Team

Updated: Jul 19, 2022

This blog continues with the summary of the work of trauma expert, Jen Alexander, who was a school counsellor, trainer, and mother. The first section we published a few days ago here.

She has suggested that if we teachers want to communicate empathy with our students, use these words and phrases:

  • I’m sorry this is so hard for you.

  • Help me understand what’s hard about it.

  • You are trying to be in charge.

  • Is something worrying you?

  • Can you tell me what you are feeling?

  • What does the feeling make you want to do?

  • What do you need right now?

  • I know it might be hard for you to have this consequence

How many do you use? What is your style of empathy with students?
